My concentration topic is about what we the girls go through as teenagers until we reached ladyhood. Going through adolescence, we grow physically and mentally. We have agonies that we don’t tell our parents about, and we try to figure them out on our own. We need our space to think through and shape out our identity. Here I explore the growth, wound, and recovery of teenage years. Just like a photograph that captures the time, my work captures the moment of growth.
Going through my teenage years, I have realized I find my own space to think (image 1). One of the main things I tried to figure out was how to love myself. We live in a generation where social media is significantly influential. Image 2’s black and white drawing of a girl shows how social media dulls our identity. I drew glitch and popups to represent damage and solution. Image 4 shows the solution, confidence. By using a package layout, I wanted to explore whether or not the imperfection of the exterior appearance (packaging) decreases the amount of acceptance (buyers); she’s still beautiful in the way she is. Image 10 shows my past of killing me inside, thinking I’m not good enough. Figuring out that I am a special person that has variety of cultures inside (image 6) helped me to embrace myself and recover. Seeking the light and not letting the worldly expectations to define me (image 8) has given me a new hope. Different from other pieces that mainly use watercolor, I used acrylic paint to show my clear vision (image 12). This medium was better for exploring clarity. I will continue to dream on and embrace every part of me until I wake up one day and reach adulthood.
